Andrew Monson’s main area of expertise is Hellenistic history.
He received his B.A. (2000) in Classical Studies from the University
of Pennsylvania, his M.Phil. (2003) in Archaeology from
University College London, and his Ph.D. (2008) in Classics from
Stanford University. He was a fellow of the Kommission für Alte
Geschichte und Epigraphik in Munich (2007) and of the Deutscher
Akademischer Austauschdienst at the University of Würzburg (2005-6).His
doctoral research was on the political transition from Ptolemaic to
Roman Egypt and its impact on agrarian institutions, especially land
rights and taxation. The study of documentary papyri has
also contributed to his work on religious associations and
temple administration in Egypt. Broader research interests that
intersect with Hellenistic history include Greek democracy and state
formation, the history of the ancient Near East and Egypt, and the rise
of the Roman empire. His articles have appeared in the Journal of
the Economic and Social History of the Orient, Historische
Sozialforschung, Ancient Society, and the Journal of
Egyptian Archaeology.
